Stage V introduces new emission limits for industrial engines

In January 2019, the new exhaust emission legislation for off-road engines will take effect. It is called Stage V and will limit not only the overall mass of particulate matter in the exhaust gas, but also the number of particles per unit of produced energy. In this article, I will describe Stage V and what impact the emission legislation has on the engine as well as the environment.

Upcoming exhaust emission legislation for off-road engines
Stage V is the upcoming exhaust emission legislation for off-road engines. The legislation is scheduled to take effect in January 2019 for engines below 56 kW as well as engines of 130 kW and above, and from January 2020 for engines from 56 kW but below 130 kW. The legislation will be valid for basically all mobile, industrial equipment powered by compression ignited or spark ignited engines. The increasingly stringent exhaust emission legislation is a strive to limit harmful substances in the exhaust gases coming from engines powered by fossil fuels. These substances include Nitrogen Oxides (NOx), Carbon Monoxide (CO), Hydrocarbons (HC) and Particulate Matter (PM).

The European Commission defines the rules for Stage V. The rules apply to all countries within the European Union and local authorities in each country ensure the fulfillment of the rules. Countries in Europe that are not members of the European Union, for example Norway, Switzerland and soon the UK, will most likely choose to follow the same rules.

A particulate filter to reduce the number of particles emitted
There has been a strong development of technologies that reduce harmful substances in exhaust gases. Stage V will only allow about three to four percent of the limits allowed by Stage I, which was introduced as late as 1999. Compared to Stage IV, which is the current legislation, Stage V will not only limit the overall mass of particulate matter in the exhaust gas but also the number of particles emitted through a particulate filter.

With our Stage V solution, we have continued to cultivate the successful design philosophy used for our current Stage IV/Tier 4 Final range, keeping the highest focus on maximised uptime, minimised fuel consumption and ease of installation, operation and maintenance.

An exhaust aftertreatment system decreases NOx levels
There are several ways of combining different techniques to achieve the Stage V emission limits. As for Stage IV, an Exhaust Aftertreatment System (EATS) with Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) is needed. This means that Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) is injected into the exhaust stream to reduce the NOx levels. For Stage V, Volvo Penta has chosen to combine modules of DOC (Diesel Oxidation Catalyst), DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter), SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction) and ASC (Ammonia Slip Catalyst). This, together with the heat management devices on the engine, will provide excellent uptime through an optimised regeneration strategy. The common-rail fuel injection system, which will be featured in our Stage V engines, will lead to an outstanding fuel efficiency and optimised combustion process. The common-rail fuel injection system will also provide significant noise reduction, which is mainly important for machines operating in urban environments.

Optimal performance and a straightforward installation of Stage V engines
We have listened closely to our customers to understand their future application requirements to secure an optimal performance and a straightforward installation of Stage V compliant engines. During the development of Volvo Penta’s Stage V solution, reliability, fuel efficiency and ease of installation were some of the most important design features. To achieve an optimal installation of the complete system we have kept the same installation interfaces for the engines, which also maximises the flexibility when installing the Exhaust Aftertreatment System. The goal is that the end-users will gain from the benefits of our solution, which will provide them with high performance and maximised uptime in their operations.
