The Volvo Penta IMO Tier III solution

IMO Tier III – a robust and efficient solution

Volvo Penta offers an IMO Tier III engine range for Volvo Penta IPS, Diesel Inboard, Marine Genset and Auxiliary applications. Based on SCR exhaust aftertreatment technology, our robust solution is designed for tough marine conditions, all over the world. The system is built to handle high sulfur fuel, and to sustain high back pressure while maintaining engine efficiency and drivability. Volvo Penta has been able to fulfill IMO III targets while maintaining the same low fuel consumption. And thanks to SCR, the engine power output remains unaffected.

A Well proven Concept

Volvo Penta has chosen to use SCR – Selective Catalytic Reduction – for exhaust aftertreatment technology. This ensures high engine power and efficiency while simultaneously reducing NOx. The SCR technology is the result of the knowledge and experience from the entire Volvo Group. The solutions that safeguard IMO Tier III requirements has been specifically adapted to demanding marine conditions and has been tested extensively at our own facilities as well as in commercial customer applications – for a total of 35,000 hours before the 2018 launch.

Ease of installation, ease of operation

With Volvo Penta, you benefit from the simplicity of a single supplier offer. This means that our type approved solution is developed, certified, monitored and maintained by the same company. One complete system, including all functions with one single point of contact. One common engine platform as well as one source of aftermarket support. One tool for service technicians. One interface for operators. In the film below, Volvo Penta’s Marine Commercial expert, Jan Willem Vissers explains the benefits.

An important step

Listen to Volvo Penta’s Environmental Director Cecilia Gunnarsson explain how we can reach further, beyond compliance with the IMO Tier III regulations: “SCR technology for NOx reduction, IPS for fuel efficiency and fossil-free fuel to reduce CO2. This combination is an important step towards sustainability.

The Volvo Penta IMO Tier III solution explained

IMO Tier III focuses on NOx limits, seeing as how NOx damages eco systems as well as posing health hazards in general. The Volvo Penta SCR solution reduces NOx levels by up to 75%. With SCR technology, Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) is infused into the exhausts, and gases are mixed inside the SCR unit. Here, the ammonia content of the DEF/urea transforms the NOx into nitrogen and water. The systems allow for 32 or 40% urea. Watch the film clip to see a systems overview and how our SCR solution works.

Flexibility and integration

For IMO Tier III, Volvo Penta installations are as flexible as possible. As a large part of the installations are made during repowering, we have prioritized utilization of machine room space. This is why we have focused our solution on a design of the SCR unit that allows for space-efficient configuration possibilities.

For additional ease of installation, the SCR unit features multiple outlets with robust bolt flanges. You also benefit from a fully integrated system. The monitoring is integrated, and values are shown on your EVC or MCC displays. The whole solution is optimized for simple installation, operation, maintenance and service.

The Volvo Penta EU Stage V Marine Engines

The Stage V emission limits for Inland Waterway (IWW) vessels was adopted by the European Parliament in 2016 and is a legally binding requirement since January 1st, 2019. Leveraging our proven IMO Tier III technology, Volvo Penta offers both D8 and D13 for Diesel Inboard, Marine Genset and Auxiliary ranges – below 300 kW – that comply with the standards. In-depth evaluations of customer needs and the legislation demands at hand has led to the development of a solution that never compromises on either performance or reliability. The engines are designed to cope with high back pressure and high-sulfur fuel – up to 1,000 ppm.
