Boat Steering and Maneuvering

Joystick Driving

Joystick Driving offers an easy way to maneuver with precision. It allows the driver to steer comfortably at all speeds with only one hand.

Joystick Driving

Autopilot

When Joystick Driving is activated, the Autopilot turns on simultaneously. The driver steers the boat by moving the Joystick. When the Joystick is released, the Autopilot is engaged and keeps a forward course. The set course can easily be changed on the Autopilot with a slight turn of the Joystick. 1: Course adjustment. 2: Steering. 3: Joystick driving on/off.

Joystick Driving

Enables Ergonomic Helm Solutions

The placement of the joystick makes uncomfortable positions and demanding steering sessions a thing of the past. With the simple press of a button on the joystick, the function is engaged and you can lean back and steer with one hand – no matter the speed – with perfect response.

Notes
Joystick Driving requires twin installation, electronic steering and the integrated Volvo Penta Autopilot. Only for diesel engines. Since the function is integrated in the Joystick, no additional hardware is needed.

Joystick Docking

Joystick Docking makes docking easy and safe. The driver just pushes or rotates the joystick in the desired direction and the boat follows: forward, reverse, sideways, or spins on its own axis. It’s simple and logical, and all maneuvers are totally intuitive.

Joystick Docking

Close-quarter Maneuvering Made Easy

Complicated shift, throttle and steering wheel combinations are no longer needed when docking a boat. Joystick Docking makes close-quarter maneuvering easy, even fun.

Joystick Docking

How it Works

The Volvo Penta IPS uses individually steerable IPS units. Sophisticated software in the Electronic Vessel Control (EVC) system transforms the driver’s joystick movements into steering angles, gearshifts and throttle positions for intuitive maneuverability at both low and high speeds.

Joystick Docking

Flexible and Easy to Install

Up to six Joystick Docking stations can be installed on the boat for maximum flexibility. The system is designed to reduce the amount of wires and connectors for easy installation.

Assisted Docking

Fully Integrated Assisted Docking System

Take control with Volvo Penta Assisted Docking – the next generation of marine automation. It allows you to compensate for some external factors, i.e., wind and current, as well as maneuver in tight spaces, enabling safer and easy boat docking when facing the challenges of crowded marinas.

Single Lever Mode

With the Single Lever Mode it is possible to enjoy the benefit of multi‐engine operation using only a single lever.

Single Lever Mode

Smooth Driving

With only one lever to control the speed, Single‐lever Mode makes it simple to control up to four engines. The driver just presses the button and can drive safe and steady even in in rough and windy conditions. Smooth driving has never been easier.

Single Lever Mode

For Multi‐engine Installations

The Single‐lever Mode makes it possible to operate twin, triple or quadruple engine installations with only one lever.

Increased safety
Controlling the speed with the Single‐lever Mode makes it simple to drive safely and steadily also in rough and windy conditions. The driver can trust the system to manage all engines while focusing on operating the boat.

Volvo Penta Throttle Control
Throttle Control

Low‐speed Mode

With the Low‐speed Mode, a boat’s speed at idling can be reduced by 50%, from 5–6 to 2–3 knots, using the throttle/gear lever. This makes the Low‐speed Mode perfect when docking, fishing or driving in canals.

Low-speed Mode

Throttle/Gear Lever Control

With the Low‐speed Mode, the throttle/gear lever is used to control the boat’s speed. In the first 12 degrees of the lever movement, the engine will remain at idle and the boat’s speed is reduced by a slip in the transmission. The slip is from 50% to full engagement and when the lever is pushed further, the gearbox is fully engaged. The throttle is increased and the speed can be controlled with the engine rpm.

Low-speed Mode

Adjustable Angles and Slip

A Volvo Penta dealer can help adjust both angles where the clutch and the slip reduction are controlled, from minimum 25% to maximum 75%. This function gives improved maneuverability, through low speed, controlled with one lever.

Easier maneuvering
The Low‐speed Mode puts full focus on operating and gives the driver more time for maneuvers and corrections. Full drivability and increased control at reduced boat speed make docking and operating in tight spaces less stressful. It also facilitates maneuvering when fishing and driving in inland waterways.

Cruise Control

The Cruise control lets the driver fine‐tune the cruising speed.

Cruise Control

Fingertip Control

With fingertip control of the engine rpm, the driver can fine‐tune the boat’s speed to optimize fuel economy and comfort at the touch of a button. Located on the control, the Cruise control button is easy to reach. With Low speed Mode activated, the Cruise control function also controls the clutch and lets the operator fine‐tune also in very low boat speed.

Cruise Control

Fine‐tune the Speed at Sea

The Cruise control enables the driver to set a specific speed for the boat without having to manually adjust the throttle to maintain the desired speed. The engine speed can then easily be finetuned with the fingertip. The Cruise control deactivates direct on throttle movement.

Cruise Control

Increased Safety and Optimized Fuel Efficiency

With the Cruise control it is easy to adjust and fine‐tune engine speed to make the drive safer in rough and windy conditions. In crowded marinas and narrow passages it is easy to make very small adjustments of the boat’s speed. The Cruise control also helps optimize the fuel efficiency.

Water Sport Control

The Tow Mode makes tubing, wakeboarding and waterskiing easier, safer and more fun. By automatically accelerating to your pre-set engine speed and compensate for changes in load, it maintains the set speed for maximum water sport fun.

Tow Mode

Easy to Operate

You set the maximum engine rpm on the Volvo Penta display. When you give full throttle, the engine accelerates at its peak, but does not go above your pre-set rpm. With changing load, i.e. the skier turns sharply, the system quickly compensates so that the engine maintains the set rpm. To adjust the speed, the driver simply pushes the buttons on the display or the Side mounted control.

Notes
Tow mode is for single installation. You need the Top mounted control or the Side mounted control with built in tow mode button. The 2,5" display is required.
